composting?

The cafe I manage is currently composting 90% of our waste and turning it into soil. This was not any easy process to get started, but with dedication and research anyone can do it. I first recommend looking for a local organic farm or a company in your area that might haul organic waste. Most of the time you can find a local farm that will take your waste for free, which is awesome! A lot of what current cafe's/restaurant are throwing away can be composted. Its just a matter of education and separating the organic waste and landfill waste. There is a lot of research that will need to be done, but try to find a business that is currently running a program or heading in that direction. Once this program is started your community will really embrace what your doing and thank you on a daily basis for your commitment to sustainable practices. Your staff will feel good about coming to work everyday because they are supporting something that is making changes for the better. Customers will become regulars because they support your cause.

In my opinion a program like this is a win win! Instead of filling the landfill with waste your contributing to giving vital nutrients back to the soil and helping to close the loop in our waste stream. We have to all stand up and do something and this a great example of something we can do in our daily lives to make a huge impact.

Check out earthtenders.com for an example of a company here in NH that is hauling waste.

Great post! Maybe in future posts describe how people can make changes in their homes to reduce their carbon footprint. I'm sure people don't realize that they can be more accountable for their waste AND save money in the process.
